weather center to show you how long it's going to last. >> we're tracking a storm system across the bay area. you can see it's a wide swath of some light showers and a few embedded moderate pockets. santa rosa. and as you head into the south, it's been less in oakland. and san francisco. look at the radar as it scans around. that rain is starting to break up. better news up in santa rosa, after some of the heavier rainfall. you're in the drying end of the storm. there's plenty of activity that could be with us for three to four hours across san francisco, san mateo, and also for hayward. you had little or nothing across the east bay. that's going to be changing with light to moderate showers moving your way. and san jose has been fairly

dry. that's going to be a steady clip in the overnight hours. overnight totals will change to almost half an inch. the wind is not a factor in the early morning hours. 10 to 25 miles per hour. it's going to be way too warm. we're going to have the full timeline for the morning commute for tomorrow. and we'll let you know when 80-degree temperatures will be returning. it's about extremes here in the bay area lately. >> we're one hour away from november 1st. back to you in a moment, jeff. in our newsroom, tonight, two young trick-or-treaters are recovering after being hit by a car in a santa rosa neighborhood tonight. the 4-year-old and 10-year-old were with adults at the time. the driver stopped immediately. the children were taken to the hospital, after apparently the children jumped in front of the car. they were treated for moderate injuries. there's no indication that the driver was under the influence

of drugs or alcohol. after hosting a party for a million people, cleanup is not easy. a soggy cleanup after today's massive giants celebration. crews are hard at work. so is the sfpd rounding up vandals. they set a few fires after the giants won the world series. >> jean elle on the suspects and the help the police are getting from the public. >> reporter: when some giants fans turned violent, the cameras were rolling. and social media was sharing the pictures. now, police are releasing new video, hoping it will also make the rounds and lead them to two arson suspects. video of vandals setting a muni bus on fire sunday night, during a giants victory celebration gone wrong, is released by the san francisco police department. >> this kind of behavior in san

francisco, we will identify you. we will arrest you. we will prosecute you. and you will pay for it. >> reporter: the chief is hoping the public will share the video and grab from it on social media, and show the two men starting the fire. earlier this week, a picture of another man about to smash a muni bus window at a barricade was shared with thousands of facebook pages. that led to the i.d. and quick arrest of 22-year-old gregory graniss. >> took huge exception to putting a barricade on the bus. was instrumental on the arrest. and we believe the same people will come forward. >> reporter: the red devil lounge posted the barricade picture on its facebook page. >> it's scary. >> reporter: the owner said he was outraged by the violence. and happy to help spread an image that would lead to an

arrest. >> with the police maxed out and people upset about what's going on, this is not how the city should be acting. >> reporter: he couldn't stop the mob sunday night. but it's a social media mob, demanding accountability. now, muni says it will cost $700,000 to replace that bus. tonight, san francisco's city attorney says the people who destroyed it will be paying that bill. >> thank you. a double serving near the giants parade. two young men were shot an leavenworth around 2:30 this afternoon. investigators say the men were wearing giants colors. but they don't think the violence is related to anything having to do with the team. both men were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. the big question, where were you today? perhaps with us, as we were broadcasting this parade. or maybe watching our live

>> reporter: for the second time in three years, fans lined up and cheered on the orange and black. there were a lot of young faces in the crowd. school districts in the bay area reported their absences. parents making a decision to bring their kids to a once-in-a-lifetime event. or in the case of the giants, a twice-in-a-lifetime event. >> i'm a bad mother. in 2010. not now. >> i don't know what she's thinking. she thinks school's more important than the giants, she's wrong. >> reporter: soaking it all in, were the giants players. >> a great moment of my life. being around the fans. they come out every year. every moment, every day. >> reporter: but the buzz of the day definitely sergio romo's t-shirt with the words, i just look illegal. twitter exploded with tweets every two seconds.

two times in three years. the fans, they're hungry for more. >> it's awesome to see this. >> reporter: now, sales are booming for sergio romo's t-shirt. more than 100 people ordered the $12 shirt today. the owner said he never heard of romo until today. >> well, he knows him well now. thank you, george. tonight, giants fans pushed it to an all-new record. b.a.r.t. had its highest number of riders in one day. today broke the old record by nearly 16,000 people. and that old record was set, guess when. november 3rd, 2010. what happened that day? oh, i know. the last giants championship parade. we have already sent a ton of pictures from the parade. you sent them to us. we posted them on our website. here's a few of those. check it out. these are pictures viewers submitted through facebook and twitter.

whether you watched the parade in san francisco, or at home, or your office, gave it up. many showing off the giants spirit. there's a break in an east bay murder case back in may when police found a woman's body stuffed in a garbage can in pleasanton. it was only recently that they identified the victim as a stockton woman. tonight, investigators say they arrested her killer, javier sandoval. they assessed a search warrant on the woman's home, which she shared with sandoval. tonight, recounting how he fought for his life after the brutal attack. 25-year-old scott stevens was surfing when a great white bit him and pulled him under. he said he never felt the shark coming. >> he came out of nowhere. pinned me under and shook me. my eyes underwater and i punched the shark on the side of the

head a couple of times until it released me. >> then, it let him go. doctors said stevens didn't get hit in any of his vital organs. he's in good spirits and a good story. he's going to need new gear. but believe it or not, he's going to hit the surf again. just ahead president obama tours the jersey shore that was devastated by the superstorm. >> everything's ruined. >> and how the recovery is going. and how it's just beginning for many people. billions meant to help tsunami victims in japan. find out how the spending was exposed. the parade might be over. but there's one order of business for barry zito and sergio romo. it happens tomorrow here on nbc bay area. details ahead. ♪

multigrain cheerios in multi-grain cheerios peanut butter. take a look. new video shows three connecticut mansions burning as sandy made landfall on monday night. this video released by the fire department in connecticut. it showed the windy conditions that prevented those firefighters from battling the blaze. first responders evacuated residents but were unable to save their home. millions of people are without power in the northeast. floodwaters remain in many areas, including lower manhattan. president obama toured the jersey coast today, where he pledged support for the long haul. jay gray is in new jersey with the latest. >> reporter: this is what the long road back looks like in new jersey. >> devastated. it's unbelievable. >> reporter: and for many,

unbearable. >> i got nothing left. no memories or anything else. everything's ruined. >> reporter: ravaged by sandy. homes ripped from their foundations. thrown in the middle of the street. entire communities washed away. others still underwater. we're seeing a very common sight here. the devastation stretches for miles. towns and lives reduced to rubble. >> can't even imagine that. no matter how much you imagine what it's going to look like, it's worse. >> reporter: president obama toured the devastation with new jersey governor chris christie today, delivering the sympathies of the nation. >> i promise, promise. you're going to be okay. >> reporter: and the promise of support. >> we are here for you. and we will not forget. we will follow-up to make sure you get all of the help you need until you rebuild. >> reporter: but they can't come back until they clean up. water continues to be pushed out of the subways in lower manhattan. limited service will start again

tomorrow. >> we are on a road to recovery. >> reporter: along that road, the lines for fuel still stretch for miles. while emotions for many have been stretched to their limit. a bond in a survivors desperately need right now as they struggle from what sandy left behind. >> that was jay gray reporting. millions of people have been impacted. new york's governor declared a transportation emergency in the wake of hurricane sandy. you see the cleanup in process here. crews raced to pump water out of flooded subway stations and the tunnels. service is expected to resume tomorrow. governor cuomo suspended all fares on commuter trains and buses, in hopes that the commuters will take mass transit. it wasn't working. manhattan was gridlocked today with thousands of extra cars. back here at home, it was a

silly night at kaiser permanenty's medical center. little patients at the hospital had costumes to wear today. miko isighting cancer. when he found out he was going to have a break in his chemo, and that meant he could celebrate his favorite holiday in san bruno, he wouldn't wait. but he also wanted to celebrate in the hospital. he began collecting costumes, receiving 160 costume donations. >> i didn't think i'd be able to celebrate halloween. but now i have a halloween costume, i think i should go out there and walk. >> i want to shake your hand. >> he is an awesome little man. donors as far away as pennsylvania and arizona contributed costumes to the collection. little batman that he is. it's one of the biggest and

well-known halloween parties around. however, right now, police are searching for a gunman that shot into a crowd of levellers on hollywood boulevard. three people suffered gunshot wounds. every year, several hundred people show up for the celebration. tonight, a different scene from the castro district, as well. after years of violence, chains seem to keep things quiet. >> reporter: a man dressed as the pope greeted us on the corner of castro and market streets in san francisco. he says his blessing was for halloween revelers to have a good time. but he told us, he needed more people. >> the police are trying to discourage people from coming here. they're spraying water on the streets to discourage people from being here. >> reporter: whether the discouragement came from the rain or the police crackdown on halloween's violent past, the castro was pretty quiet. >> i was expecting a lot more people to be out here celebrating halloween. and especially, you know, the

giants, there was a parade. >> reporter: the giants parade brought thousands of people to the city. many thought the celebration would continue throughout the night. but rain may be keeping the ghouls away. >> this is a quiet year. quiet is very good. last year, at this time, there was elbow-to-elbow people across this entire street. >> reporter: but last year's halloween party here was nowhere near the way people used to converge in this area. in 2006, a shooting injured nine people. in 2002, 5 people were stabbed and there were 30 arrests. in 2007, the street party was banned to keep goblins and weapons out. according to robin hill, the ban is bad for business. >> people would come shopping for halloween costumes. and now, they don't really have a big event. so, i'm not selling the novelties that i used to. >> reporter: for shane johnson,

it's a welcome change. >> especially what's going on the last couple of years, it's nice to be out and having a good time. >> reporter: despite the rain and relatively small crowd, the good times turned bad for a few people. police say there were some arrests. in san francisco, cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. today, we dressed up as parade broadcasters. >> today, we were parade broadcasters. now, i'm a pumpkin. >> no. not at all. >> you did a great job out there, too, by the way. awesome. >> thank you. >> glued to the tv. let's get a look. this halloween storm we've been dealing with all evening long. it's moving so slowly. you don't have too much heavy rainfall. it's just a slow motion. at 6:00 p.m., across the north bay. now, the east bay. it's traveled 110 miles in 5 hours. that's 22 miles per hour. again, a slow motion of this storm tonight did add up the

rainfall. most notably up in the north bay, which squeezed out a lot of the moisture. as you head to oakland and san francisco, it's been more minuscule. as the radar scans right now, here's the good thing. in the east bay, you've had little to nothing tonight. it was great for trick or treating. but you need the rain. up the creek, to san ramon. and it's slow to get across san jose. probably one of the best spots for trick or treaters tonight. we're looking at the showers to slowly approach. not expecting a huge soaking through the morning hours, especially for the south bay. but the roadways will be slick. let's take you to the sky camera network. and there it is. the city looking incredible tonight. the low cloud cover. a lot of parties, for the world series championship, the ticker

tape parade, or halloween. you can see the cars pass by the bay bridge approach. let's get you into the next 48 hours. the front we dealt with and the low pressure that's dragging its feet. it's going to be gone tomorrow. and we see the high pressure set up. it looks like it will be good enough to give us warm to hot weather with temperatures that will be returning up in the 80s. as we head throughout tomorrow, not quite there. we'll have 50s and 60s at the coastline. and 70s at the interior valley. we'll get in on clearing for friday. at 6:00 a.m., we'll have the showers across the peninsula, also for the south bay. and by 2:00 or 3:00 p.m. tomorrow, we'll have sunshine across the bay area. we can't rule out spotty showers across fremont and palo alto and for the south bay. overall, we should be done with the heaviest rainfall. for the morning, we start with 53 in santa rosa. and 50s in the east and the east

bay. 67 in san rafael. and 67 in san jose. and for livermore, we'll top out in the low 70s. on your seven-day forecast, numbers go up by friday, in the low to mid-70s. saturday, dry, close to 80s. don't forget to turn the clocks on sunday. and on voting day next tuesday, we're expecting plenty of sunshine. no excuses for not getting out to the polls. the weather looks awesome. >> will we get an extra hour of sleep on the weekend? >> fall back. >> this weekend? >> this sunday. >> oh, i need it. >> can we do it tonight? coming up, more than $100 billion meant for the tsunami relief in japan. tonight, we find out what else it paid for.

happy halloween, everyone. the warriors opened their season against the phoenix suns tonight. and the warriors didn't want any candy. a sweet victory would be enough. let's go to the desert where they were playing on the hard court. andrew bogut playing his first game as a warrior. bogut handling the ball. and he was driving down the lane and gets the bucket. 8 points in 18 minutes. under 90 seconds remaining in the game. david lee finds carl landry. two-handed layup right there. warriors up one. under a minute left. landry showing he has range. bingo, count it. landry had a game-high 17 points. four seconds left. steph curry at the line. misses both free throws. suns need a bucket to win it from three-point range. they didn't even get the shot off in time.
